| Deborah Collins |
April 1996 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Deborah Collins of Menominee. Deborah ran away from her home in Kentucky at the age of 17. Soon after, she had two children and moved to Wisconsin where her husband had a job waiting. When he lost his job they moved to Michigan where Collins enrolled in night classes and received her high school diploma. To help make ends meet they turned to the Menominee County FIA. Through the JTPA program, Deborah received her certificate for stenography but due to problems at home and a lack of experience, she was unable to secure long-term employment. She was forced to take her children and leave their home because of her husband's drug and alcohol problem and because she was a victim of domestic violence. She got divorced and was granted full custody of her children. As a single parent without transportation, she was referred to the MOST program and soon after gave birth to her daughter. Now, with help from the Work First program, where Deborah was taught job seeking skills, interviewing techniques and resume writing, she is proud to be off AFDC after receiving assistance for almost 13 years.
