| Harold Barton |
The February 1996 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Harold Barton of Lake City. Harold is a single father of two who came to Michigan from Utah. With a strong work history and some college education, Harold thought finding employment would be easy but the demand for skilled workers was not great in Missaukee County and he had to turn to the Department of Social Services when all his resources were drained. In October 1994, Harold was referred to the Private Industry Council. He was introduced to the staff of various temporary agencies in the area. He was hired by a boat manufacturer and later survived a lay-off without applying for public assistance. He used skills learned through the Work First program to find employment elsewhere and was eventually hired back by the boat manufacturer. His AFDC case is closed and Harold has been a positive role model for his children.
