January 1996 Achiever of the Month Award recognized Sharon Davis of Ypsilanti, a single mother who turned to the Department of Social Services to help make ends meet. Sharon was faced with many barriers such as a lack of transportation and child care and she suffered from very low self-esteem. She was referred to the Work First program and learned how to use a computer and she completed a resume. She received bus tokens for transportation and a clothing allowance to help her find a job. her perseverance paid off. Sharon has been employed at a home improvement store for nine months and has recently received a raise in salary. Also, she has gone above and beyond the requirements by assisting DSS and Work First staff in orientations serving as an example to other clients that it is possible to achieve self-sufficiency. Sharon's AFDC case has been closed due to excess income.
