December 1995
• Mary Halley Mary Halley of Dollar Bay received the December 1995 Achiever of the Month Award. Mary is a single other of three children. She began receiving assistance at age 18 when she became pregnant. The lowest point of her life was when her marriage broke up.
She began counseling and wanted to change her life and become a good role model for her children. She received her GED, began Nurses' Aide training and started attending church regularly.

November 1995
Michelle Mann The November 1995 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Michelle Mann of Rockwood. Ms. Mann is a single mother of three children. Her youngest daughter suffered traumatic brain injury at the age of three when a construction I-beam fell on top of her. Ms. Mann applied for public assistance and requested services from the MOST program because she was in the Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at Wayne County Community College and needed help.

September 1995
Nancy Peterson Gerald Miller presented the September 1995 Achiever of the Month Award to Nancy Peterson of Fremont. Ms. Peterson, the mother of three children, separated from her husband in December of 1991 and moved back to Michigan, from Virginia, in January of 1992. In February, 1992 she turned to the Department of Social Services to help make ends meet.

August 1995
Susan Snyr August 1995 Achiever of the Month recognized Susan Snyr of Manitou Beach, a single mother of two boys, who turned to the Department of Social Services for help when she separated from her husband in 1986. Susan decided to take advantage of a Jobs Training Partnership Act Program and signed up for two year's coursework in dental assistance. She graduated with high honors, but could not find a job that paid well enough to support herself and her children.

July 1995
Julie Thornton Gerald Miller presented the July, 1995 Achiever of the Month Award to Julie Thornton of Plainwell. In May of 1983, while living in Kalamazoo, Julie's husband left her and her son and she had to turn to DSS to help make ends meet. In September of 1985 she and her husband got a divorce and in August of 1990 she moved to Allegan County to make a fresh start. She was referred to the MOST program and it was discovered that Julie had not worked since July of 1980 but had been volunteering at her son' ...

June 1995
James Bland The June, 1995 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to James Bland of Alpena. Mr. Bland and his family moved several times looking for employment and went to Alpena where their family support system was. Jim took an entry level job at a restaurant but because the job was temporary with limited hours he applied for assistance with the DSS. He worked with the employment staff at DSS and was also referred to the Northeast Michigan Consortium and its JTPA program.

Debra Bigham May 1995 Achiever of the Month Award recognized Debra Bigham of Gladwin. Ms. Bigham began receiving assistance in 1977 after the birth of her daughter. While receiving AFDC she did volunteer work but it was many years before she was challenged to work toward becoming self-sufficient. She spoke with her DSS MOST worker about how to build a work history and she attended two Job Readiness programs.

Carrie Brown Gerald Miller presented the April 1995 Achiever of the Month Award to Carrie Brown of Detroit. Ms. Brown has been on assistance for the past five years and is a single mother of two children. Carrie Brown was referred to WORK FIRST by the Kercheval Townsend Office district manager and from there, she went through one of the City of Detroit's job search contractors, Operation Help.

March 1995
Buu Quoc Chuong March, 1995 Achiever of the Month Award recognizes Buu Quoc Chuong of Lansing who left Vietnam in 1989 with his wife and children and came to Michigan in August, 1991. Mr. Chuong has attended Lansing Community College since 1992 and worked part-time while attending school. Occasionally, he received bus passes when his car broke down, but needed minimal assistance as he is extremely motivated and self-directed.

February 1995
Eva Reid The February, 1995 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Eva Reid of Grand Rapids who applied for public assistance when her husband lost his job and she discovered she had breast cancer. After an unsuccessful job search she entered MOST (Michigan Opportunity and Skills Training) Program through DSS. Ms. Reid decided to pursue training as a Practical Nurse and graduated from Grand Rapids Community College in May 1994 with a certificate in Practical Nursing.

January 1995
Gloria Mologianes Gloria Mologianes, a mother of three from Grayling, received the January 1995 Achiever of the Month Award. She had to apply for assistance due to a problem pregnancy that necessitated her leaving her position as a Nursing Assistant at a nursing home. Later, due to a back problem, she found herself sitting at home, depressed and faced with family problems.
