Mary Halley

Mary Halley of Dollar Bay received the December 1995 Achiever of the Month Award. Mary is a single other of three children. She began receiving assistance at age 18 when she became pregnant. The lowest point of her life was when her marriage broke up. She began counseling and wanted to change her life and become a good role model for her children. She received her GED, began Nurses' Aide training and started attending church regularly. She discovered that she enjoyed working with the elderly and began working in December of 1992 at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility. She overcame barriers such as transportation, child care and health problems with help from the MOST program through car repairs, mileage, uniforms, shoes and an employment physical. Her determination led to being hired full-time. Mary's AFDC case has been closed due to excess income.
