Gerald Miller presented the September 1995 Achiever of the Month Award to Nancy Peterson of Fremont. Ms. Peterson, the mother of three children, separated from her husband in December of 1991 and moved back to Michigan, from Virginia, in January of 1992.
In February, 1992 she turned to the Department of Social Services to help make ends meet. She had to overcome car problems, a severe hearing impairment, poor living conditions and no education beyond the eleventh grade.
Nancy completed her Practical Nurse degree in May of 1995, with honors, at Muskegon Community College where she maintained a 3.5 GPA. While at school, she participated in a peer tutoring program and tutored other students and she secured an Eastern Star Scholarship to help defray the cost of her tuition. She passed her boards and has been employed as a nurse at the Newaygo Medical Care Facility with a starting wage of $9.92 per hour since June of 1995.
Nancy also finds time to volunteer as a consumer representative on Newaygo County's Federal Emergency Management Agency Board. Nancy's AFDC case has been closed since July, 1995.
