August 1995 Achiever of the Month recognized Susan Snyr of Manitou Beach, a single mother of two boys, who turned to the Department of Social Services for help when she separated from her husband in 1986.
Susan decided to take advantage of a Jobs Training Partnership Act Program and signed up for two year's coursework in dental assistance. She graduated with high honors, but could not find a job that paid well enough to support herself and her children. She then enrolled in undergraduate courses at Washtenaw Community College to pursue a bachelor's degree in nursing.
Ms. Snyr completed two years at Washtenaw Community College then transferred to the University of Michigan for three more years, earning her degree in April 1994. Based on her excellent academic standing, a 3.8 grade point average, Susan was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International, a sorority of nursing students.
In December, 1994 she began her current position at U of M Hospital in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Susan went from receiving about $6,000 in public assistance to making close to $40.000 with benefits as a nurse.
