The June, 1995 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to James Bland of Alpena. Mr. Bland and his family moved several times looking for employment and went to Alpena where their family support system was.
Jim took an entry level job at a restaurant but because the job was temporary with limited hours he applied for assistance with the DSS. He worked with the employment staff at DSS and was also referred to the Northeast Michigan Consortium and its JTPA program.
In July of 1994 Mr. Bland suffered a heart attack, but fortunately has limited evidence of the attack. Two weeks after his discharge he obtained full employment and they were able to work themselves off assistance.
Prior to leaving assistance, Jim interviewed with the Northeast Michigan Consortium and obtained a job as a Case Manager/Trainer and Employment Manacheckerger with the WORK FIRST program. Jim still holds a second part-time job and he and his wife also find time to do volunteer work for their community.
