May 1995 Achiever of the Month Award recognized Debra Bigham of Gladwin. Ms. Bigham began receiving assistance in 1977 after the birth of her daughter.
While receiving AFDC she did volunteer work but it was many years before she was challenged to work toward becoming self-sufficient. She spoke with her DSS MOST worker about how to build a work history and she attended two Job Readiness programs.
Her most recent Job Readiness program with Gladwin County's local Service Delivery Area led to a paid, clerical position on November 28, 1994. On April 3, 1995, Debra gave testimony at the House Appropriations Subcommittee Public Hearing on the Department's Fiscal Year 1996 Budget describing what it is like to be dependent.
She is setting an excellent example for her daughter who is 17 years old and who also works. Ms. Bigham's AFDC and Food Stamp cases were closed due to excess earnings and employment.
