Gerald Miller presented the April 1995 Achiever of the Month Award to Carrie Brown of Detroit. Ms. Brown has been on assistance for the past five years and is a single mother of two children.
Carrie Brown was referred to WORK FIRST by the Kercheval Townsend Office district manager and from there, she went through one of the City of Detroit's job search contractors, Operation Help. They sent her on two job interviews. She was hired the same day at JOWA Security Company by the president, Brenda Gissendanner.
Ms. Brown is a Security Guard at the WORK FIRST intake center and has been on the job for five weeks where she earns $4.50 an hour and works 40 hours a week. She received public assistance as a child, but is breaking the cycle of dependence and is setting an excellent example for her children.
