The February, 1995 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Eva Reid of Grand Rapids who applied for public assistance when her husband lost his job and she discovered she had breast cancer.
After an unsuccessful job search she entered MOST (Michigan Opportunity and Skills Training) Program through DSS. Ms. Reid decided to pursue training as a Practical Nurse and graduated from Grand Rapids Community College in May 1994 with a certificate in Practical Nursing.
During her schooling she faced the break up of her marriage and the challenges of single parenthood. Eva Reid has been hired at the Holland Home - Fulton Manor as a Practical Nurse, had passed her state boards, received her license and has increased her work hours to the point that her AFDC case is closed. She is planning to return to Community College to pursue her Associate Degree in Nursing part-time while continuing to work.
