When Cheryl Sorelle of Marquette became the fifth person to be recognized as an Achiever of the Month in February of 1994, the single parent of three children had been on AFDC during much of the previous five years.
She had taken a number of steps to reach self-sufficiency - one was to participate in the MOST Program and the other was to attend Northern Michigan University where she studied to become a medical transcriptionist.
She got a job at Marquette General Hospital where today she still works full-time as an aide in the home health program. With this experience going for her, Sorelle is now in a position to bid on other hospital jobs - something she plans to do. She is also considering enrolling in a business/computer program in Marquette.
Since being named an Achiever, she has been featured in a Marquette Mining Journal article as well as in a story in the hospital employee newsletter.
All in all, Sorelle says she is doing well and is "very busy."
