Heather VanPelt

Photo of January 2003 DHS Achiever Heather VanPelt Heather VanPelt of Grayling was presented with the January 2003, Achiever of the Month award. This mother of one child first turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in June 1995. Through the Lapeer County FIA she received Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, Food Assistance, Medicaid and child day care off and on for several years to help make ends meet.

In 1998, Heather, who was unemployed and having difficulty providing for herself and her daughter, once again applied for assistance. During this time Heather was living with her mother and stepfather. When her parents decided to relocate to Crawford County, they encouraged Heather to move with them. In 1999, the family moved to Grayling and Heather’s FIP case transferred to the Crawford County FIA.

Heather hoped the move would provide her with the opportunity to make a better life for her family and she was determined to do what was necessary to increase her employability and gain self-sufficiency.

However, despite her resolve, Heather knew she faced several serious challenges; she lacked employment, transportation and did not have a high school diploma. To assist Heather in preparing for employment the FIA referred her to the Work First program. Crawford County’s Work First provider, the Michigan Works! Service Center helped Heather prepare a resume and develop her employability skills.

In October 2000, with the assistance of a friend who was employed at the Grayling Nursing Center, Heather began Competency Evaluated Nursing Assistant training. The Michigan Works! Service Center supported her efforts by providing funds for work clothing and mileage reimbursement. In addition, the FIA helped her purchase a car. After working for 90 days at the Grayling Nursing Center, Heather received her certification as a registered care provider.

Heather’s hard work soon paid off. On August 29, 2001 her FIP case closed due to her earnings. She continued to receive Food Assistance and Medicaid benefits.

On August 2, 2001, Heather interviewed and was hired by Compassionate Care Home Health Services. She still works there today.

Heather married in 2001. Currently, she and their daughter are covered by her husband’s health insurance. In December 2002, Heather voluntarily closed her Medicaid and Food Assistance cases.

Ms. VanPelt is the 110th Michigan resident to be honored with the Achiever of the Month award. She is an enthusiastic and inspirational role model to her family and to others striving toward independence.
