Jodie Garcia is the 114th recipient of the Family Independence Agency’s (FIA) Achiever of the Month award. This mother of one first applied to the FIA for medical assistance in March 1996, while she was pregnant with her daughter.
In 2001, Jodie again turned to the FIA when she was having difficulty providing for her family. Through the Allegan County FIA, she received Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, day care, Medicaid and Food Assistance.
To help Jodie prepare for employment the FIA referred her to the Work First program. The Allegan County Work Force assisted Jodie in developing her skills by enrolling her in the Open Certificate Program in accounting at M-Tech, which is located in Holland.
In March 2002, Jodie began her coursework and for several months studied Accounting II and III, Peachtree/Quick Books and Excel II. She completed the program on June 6, 2002, and earned a certificate in accounting. That same month, Jodie received an interview at Techno-Coat through Manpower. She was hired as a temporary employee in June, and on September 3, 2002, she was hired by Techno-Coat as a full-time employee.
The FIA assisted Jodie’s work efforts by supplying day care benefits. In addition, Jodie’s mother provided a place for Jodie and her daughter to live.
Jodie’s FIP case closed in July 2002, due to earnings. Her child day care case closed in November 2002, and her Food Assistance case closed in January 2003. She continues to receive transitional Medicaid.
Jodie continues to be employed at Techno-Coat as an Accounts Receivable Assistant. Currently, she is in the process of purchasing her own home.
Ms. Garcia was selected to receive the May 2003, Achiever of the Month award because of her positive attitude, commitment to improve conditions for her family, and determined efforts to achieve independence from the welfare system.
