Edna Price is the 119th recipient of the Family Independence Agency’s (FIA) Achiever of the Month award. This single mother of one child, first applied for assistance in August 2002. At that time, she was pregnant, recently laid off from her job in Marquette, and had relocated to Alger County to live with her father and stepmother.
Through the Alger County FIA, Edna received Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, Food Assistance and Medicaid. Additionally, to assist Edna with finding employment, the FIA referred her to the Work First program. Edna willingly fulfilled her Work First requirements and began her job search. However, despite her optimism she was unable to find employment quickly. Her limited physical ability due to her pregnancy proved to be a significant barrier to obtaining work.
Edna was determined to do whatever she could to better her circumstances and provide for her family. With the assistance of Michigan Works! The Job Force—while still on deferral from Work First, and only two weeks after the birth of her son—Edna completed and submitted an application for school and financial assistance to Bay De Noc Community College.
Edna was accepted into the community college and is currently studying to earn her certification as a special education teacher’s aide.
In January 2003, Edna was hired by Bay De Noc Community College to work as a member of their cleaning crew. The FIA supported her work efforts by supplying day care assistance. In June 2003, Edna’s FIP case closed due to her earnings. She continues to receive Food Assistance, Medicaid and child day care.
Edna is scheduled to complete her certification in May 2004. After graduation she plans to continue her studies and earn a bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate.
