Angela Denny of Ionia County was the proud recipient of the October 2004, Achiever of the Month award. This single parent of one child turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in September 2003, when a change in administration at her work place left her jobless.
Through the Ionia County FIA, Angela received Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, Medicaid and Food Assistance to help provide for her family.
While she was grateful for the support, Angela was determined not to make public assistance a way of life. She was committed to doing whatever was necessary to be economically independent.
To assist Angela in finding employment, the FIA referred her to the Work First Program, where Ms. Denny participated in Job Club activities and worked on improving her interviewing skills. Work First supported her job search efforts by supplying mileage reimbursement.
After only two weeks, Angela was employed at a local Burger King. Work First provided funds for work clothing and later, funds for car repairs and auto insurance.
While working at Burger King, Angela continued to attend Job Club to search for a position that provided a higher salary, offered more work hours and included benefits.
In December 2003, Angela secured a clerical position with Clothing Care, a dry cleaning establishment, located in Ionia.
Even after gaining full-time employment, Angela continued to fill in at Burger King when needed. She also maintained her participation in Job Club to provide information and encouragement to other clients.
Ms. Denny’s hard work and determination quickly paid off. In January 2004, her cash assistance closed due to her earnings and her Food Assistance was reduced due to gaining full-time employment. Ms. Denny continues to receive transitional Medicaid.
Ms. Denny is the 131st Michigan resident to be honored with the Achiever of the Month award.
