Kimberly Merritt

Kimberly Merritt, Achiever of the Month for December 2004 The December 2004 Achiever of the Month award was presented to Kimberly Merritt of Genesee County.

Ms. Merritt is the single parent of two children. She turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for help in February 2001. At that time she was unemployed and needed assistance providing for her family.

Through the Genesee County FIA, Kimberly received Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, Medicaid and Food Assistance to help make ends meet.

In the spring of 2001, Kimberly was accepted into Baker Academy 1, and entered the Patient Care Technician program at Baker College in Flint. Her tuition was paid by funds from FIA, Work First and Pell grants. Work First also helped with financial assistance for books and school supplies. Additionally, the FIA established onsite staff at the college to monitor attendance and grades, and provide educational and personal support to clients in Baker Academy 1.

During most of 2001, Kimberly’s car was not working and she depended upon public transportation to travel to and from school. The FIA supported her efforts by supplying bus passes. Additionally, when Kimberly was able to drive her vehicle, the FIA paid for license plates and car insurance.

The following year the FIA supplied funds for car repairs and later, when the vehicle was beyond repair, the FIA provided money to purchase another car.

Kimberly’s mother was also very supportive. She provided emotional support and helped her daughter meet rent payments when Kimberly was not receiving FIP.

Despite receiving reduced tuition and a work-study opportunity through Baker College, she continued to struggle financially. Kimberly refused to be discouraged. She was determined to complete her education and do whatever was necessary to help her become economically independent.

In 2004, Kimberly earned her Patient Care Technician certificate, making the Dean’s and President’s list, and receiving a perfect attendance award. Additionally, in 2004, Kimberly completed her clinical work and earned her registered nursing degree. In November 2004, Kimberly was hired by Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc and is working there today.

Kimberly’s cash assistance and Food Assistance cases closed in November 2004, due to her earnings, She will continue to receive transitional Medicaid until November 2005.
