She turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in 1999. She had recently left her job as an Assistant Manager at Sally's Beauty Supply to care for her daughter, who had a serious medical condition and was recuperating from surgery.

This single mother of three children turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in September 1997. At that time, she was pregnant with her second child, unemployed and had just relocated from Wakefield, Michigan to Monroe County.

She first turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for help in 1992. At that time, she had just moved to Michigan in search of a better life for her children and was trying to get established. Because of her rheumatoid arthritis she had difficulty obtaining employment and needed help providing for her family.

Through the Alcona FIA she received Family Independence Program benefits, food stamps and Medicaid to help make ends meet.

Vivian Gonzalez The June 2001 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Vivian Gonzalez of Three Rivers. This single mother of three came to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for help in May 2000. Through the St. Joseph County FIA, Vivian received Family Independence Program benefits, Medicaid, food stamps and day care, four critical support programs that are essential to helping families when their own resources have been temporarily exhausted.

At that time she was pregnant with her first child and needed help providing for her family. Through the FIA she received Family Independence Program benefits, food stamps, child day care and Medicaid.

Carol Koon The April 2001 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Carol Koon. This married mother of four children sought assistance from the Osceola County Family Independence Agency (FIA) in 1999, after her husband was laid of from his job and they discovered they would have to wait 6 to 8 weeks for unemployment benefits to begin. Through the FIA the Koon's received Family Independence Program (FIP) benifits, food stamps and Medicaid to help make ends meet.

Khristel DeLoach The March 2001 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Khristel DeLoach of Detroit. This single mother of two children first came to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for help in November 1992. For the next several years she was on and off of assistance and working at a variety of temporary agencies to provide for her family. She most recently came to FIA for assistance in March 1998 when she was unable to work due to medical complications resulting from her pregnancy.

Melissa Henry Melissa Henry of Battle Creek was the proud recipient of the February 2001 Achiever of the Month Award. This single mother of seven children first began receiving Aid for Dependent Children in 1973. Later, when the program name changed she received Family Independence Program funds off and on for several years.

Roxanne Taylor The January 2001 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Roxanne Taylor of Jackson. Ms. Taylor is the single mother of three children. She came to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) in March 1998. At the time, she was pregnant with her third child, her husband had just left the household and she was badly in need of financial help to provide for her family. Through the Jackson County FIA she received Family Independence Program benefits, Medicaid, day care and food stamps.
