Lucinda Holloway

Photo of Achiever of the Month for Dec 2001 Lucinda Holloway of Waterford was the proud recipient of the December 2001 Achiever of the Month Award. This single mother of two came to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in April 2001. At that time, she had recently lost her job after taking a medical leave of absence due to a domestic violence situation. Through the Oakland County, District 1 FIA office she received Family Independence Program funds, Medicaid and food assistance benefits (formerly food stamps) to help provide for her family.

Despite coping with the challenges of domestic violence and finding new employment, Lucinda was committed to building a better life for her family. Counseling through the Haven and Mercy Care Network helped her work through the traumas of domestic violence and the FIA referred her to their Work First provider, Waterford Community Placement Center so she could receive assistance in finding employment.

At Work First, Lucinda received help with organizing and preparing her job search, resume writing and interviewing. Although she had held a variety of jobs in the past, she had a difficult time finding employment because she lacked training. To help Lucinda find a position in the health field, her Work First case worker helped her explore ways to complete her training as a nurse’s assistant. In August 2001, Lucinda received training in catheterization from the Helping Hands Agency. When she completed the training she began working at Helping Hands in home care nursing.

In September 2001, Lucinda completed her nurse’s assistant training through a program operated by the Red Cross. In October 2001, she applied for a job at Antrium Home Health Care. They were so impressed by her credentials that she was quickly hired. She contiunes to work there today. In October 2001, Lucinda’s cash assistance and food assistance case closed due to earnings. Currently, she receives Medicaid and child day care. In the near future Lucinda would like to receive her certified nurse’s assistant license and she plans to pursue additional training to become a licensed practical nurse.
