Chaunce Roe was the proud recipient of the May 2001 Achiever of the Month Award. This single mother of two came to the Iron County Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in 1995. At that time she was pregnant with her first child and needed help providing for her family. Through the FIA she received Family Independence Program benefits, food stamps, child day care and Medicaid.
Chaunce’s lifelong dream was to become a nurse. After high school she entered the practical nursing program at Bay De Noc Community College. Unfortunately in 1993, due to illness she was forced to drop out of the program. Later, she was able to go back to Bay De Noc and complete an associates degree in Liberal Arts in 1994.
In 1997, Chaunce learned of the Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) program. Her Work First provider, Western UP Michigan Works! enrolled her in JTPA and in 1998 she began taking medical transcription courses at Bay De Noc. While attending the community college she began reconsidering her goals. In 1998, encouraged by her family and her Family Independence Specialist, she enrolled in Bay De Noc’s nursing program.
Chaunce received a Pell grant to assist with educational expenses and also worked the evening shift at McDonalds’s for several years to augment her income. When her car needed repairs, Western Michigan UP Michigan Works! supplied the funds to make it road worthy. Later, when the car was no longer operational they also provided some of the monies to purchase another vehicle.
In August 2000, Chaunce completed her licensed practical nursing degree at Bay De Noc. She passed her state boards in October of that same year. In March 2001, Chaunce was hired by the Iron County Medical Facility where she continues to work today as a licensed practical nurse. Chaunce’s Family Independence Program cash assistance case closed due to earnings on July 31, 1999. In the future she would like to go back to school to obtain her registered nursing degree.
