The October 2000 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Michael DeYoung of Sault Ste Marie. This single parent of two children, turned to the Chippewa County FIA for assistance in 1995. At that time he was unemployed and needed help providing for his family. His children received Family Independence Program benefits, food stamps and Medicaid.
In the past, Michael has worked as a short order cook and as a deli clerk. Health problems made it dificult for him to walk or stand for long periods of time and he knew that he would not be able to support his family by working in these type of jobs in the future. In 1995, he decided to go back to college to earn a teaching degree.
Through difficult times Michael's family was very supportive. His children's grandparents, acted as emergency babysitters and cared for his children on many weekends so he could study for a test or write a paper.
In addition, Michael received assistance from the FIA, Sault Housing Commission and Michigan Department of Career Development Rehabilitation Services. He credits these agencies with helping him keep a roof over his family's head and making it possible for him to find the money to be able to go back to school.
In May 1999, Michael graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Secondary Education. He completed his one year teaching practicum at the Sault Area Middle School in Sault Ste. Marie. In September of this year Michael began teaching Government and Economic classes full-time at Rudyard High School in Rudyard.
On October 25, 2000, the children's Family Independence Program case closed due to Michael's earnings. His family continues to receive Medicaid. Michael is a wonderful role model. Through his example his children will learn that determination and hard work can lead to success.
