Bobbie Davidson

Photo of Achiever of the Month for Aug 2000 The August 2000 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Bobbie Davidson of Baldwin. Ms. Davidson is the single mother of two children. She turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for help in 1993. She was divorced, her finances were exhausted and she was having a difficult time making ends meet. Through the FIA Bobbie received Aid for Dependent (ADC) Children and Medicaid.

For the next several years Bobbie moved from job to job and was on and off of ADC. In 1996 she applied for public assistance in Kent County and received Family Independence Program funds and Medicaid. In 1997, Bobbie moved to Baldwin because she thought living in a smaller community would benefit her children. When she relocated, her case was transferred to the Lake County FIA.

A few years ago, Bobbie was diagnosed as dyslexic. The local Michigan Works! Agency, Michigan Human Resources Development, Inc. referred her to the Michigan Department of Career Development Rehabilitation Services. They enrolled her in classes at West Shore Community College to help improve her reading and math skills.

With the assistance of her Work First case worker and the Lake County Project Zero Coordinator, Bobbie was able to gain employment at the Burger King in Ludington. She still works there today. In June of this year Bobbie's cash assistance case closed due to earnings. She continues to receive transitional Medicaid.

Bobbie plans to continue her reading and math classes at West Shore Community College and later attend a culinary school. In the future she plans to become a chef. Her father was a ship's cook for 21 years and she has always loved to watch him cook.

Bobbie is a wonderful role model for her children. Through her example they have learned that perseverance and determination can overcome major challenges and lead to success.
