The July 2000 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Lorie Fooce. This mother of three first sought assistance from the Ontonogan Family Independence Agency in 1994. She received Aid for Dependent Children, which later became the Family Independence Program funds (FIP), Medicaid and food stamps.
Lorie was referred to the Work First program in August 1994. For several years she worked in a variety of part-time jobs. While she was glad to be employed, she realized that she lacked the necessary skills to obtain a job that would enable her to support her family or move off of assistance.
In the local newspaper Lorie came across information on training opportunities that were offered through Work First. With Work First's assistance she enrolled in Certified Nurses Aid Training. Work First paid for the training, testing fees and uniforms. They also provided her with the funds to purchase a car and later, car repairs. Lorie completed her training in a few months.
In May 1999, she graduated and was immediately hired by Gogebic Medical Care. She continues to work there today.
Ms. Fooce's Family Independence case closed in May 1999. She currently receives food stamps, Medicaid and day care assistance. Lorie is a positive role model for her children. She illustrates that with hard work and determination you can succeed.
