Michelle Rios was selected to receive the May 2000 Achiever of the Month Award because she has demonstrated remarkable progress toward self-sufficiency and self-improvement.
Ms. Rios is a single mother of two children. She became involved with the Family Independence Agency (FIA) in July 1993. At the time, she was unemployed and very worried about being able to provide for her family. Through the Montcalm County FIA she received Family Independence Program benefits, Medicaid and food stamps.
In 1993, through her own efforts Michelle obtained a student loan and enrolled in a cosmetology program to learn how to do acrylic nails. In August 1994, after completing her coursework Michelle found a job as a nail technician at The Golden Comb in St. Johns. Later that same month, she also began working at Hairrazors in Carson City. For nearly to four years she worked two jobs to provide for her family. In March 1998, she began working exclusively at Hairrazors. She still works there today.
In an effort to improve her employment opportunities Michelle decided to return to school. With the help of student loans and the Job Training Partnership Act program, she was able to enroll in Montcalm Community College. Currently, she is studying to be a medical office assistant. In addition to providing an educational opportunity, Work First supplied supportive services enabling Michelle to purchase school supplies and car repairs.
Michelle's hard work has paid off. In September 1999, her cash assistance case was closed due to earnings. Michelle has also achieved academic success, by making the Dean's list at Montcalm Community College. Today, Michelle is on a path to a brighter future.
