Dionne Cole of Detroit was the proud recipient of the March 2000 Achiever of the Month Award. This single mother of one child initially came to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) as part of the Teen Parent Program, where she learned valuable information about budgeting and managing her income. In September 1999, when she exceeded the Teen Parent Program age limit, she was transferred to the Fullerton-Jeffries District office.
Although she needed help with food, transportation and health care, she did not want to come to the FIA to seek temporary aid. After only one meeting with her Family Independence Specialist, Dionne began a self-initiated job search, and in a matter of days found employment as a security guard with the Strategic Employment Group. Through the FIA, Dionne received Family Independence Program funds, food stamps and Medicaid. The FIA also supplied her with the funds to purchase a car.
While cash assistance was helpful, Dionne was committed to becoming economically independent. Despite the challenges in her life she has remained determined and focused on her goal. Her efforts quickly paid off. On December 31, 1999, her cash assistance case closed due to earnings. In the future Dionne would like to attend Wayne Community College and earn a degree in Business Management. She plans to one day open her own beauty salon.
