| Crystal McClain |
The January 2000 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Crystal McClain. The mother of four sought assistance from the Genesee County Family Independence Agency (FIA) in 1989 when she was 15, pregnant and badly in need of financial assistance. Through the FIA she received Family Independence Program funds, Food Stamps, Medicaid and child day care. When Crystal was referred to the Work First program her provider, Human Investment and Development supported her efforts to gain employment by supplying job placement, mileage reimbursement and clothing vouchers.
Over the years Crystal was able to maintain consistent employment but she had never made enough to get off cash assistance. To increase her chances of finding a better paying job she went back to school to get her high school diploma. In 1998 she received her GED from the Mott adult education program. In April 1998, Crystal went to work as a housekeeper at the Medilodge Convalescent Center. When a nursing assistant training program became available, she signed up, attended classes and earned her certification.
On October 13, 1998, Crystal's cash assistance case closed due to earnings. Today she works full-time at Integrated Health Systems of Clarkston/The Greenery as a nursing assistant. Despite, the additional challenge of coping with a son who has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Crystal has maintained an upbeat and positive approach to life. She is on a path to a brighter future and continues to move forward in all aspects of her life.
