The January 2002 Achiever of the Month Award was presented to Kathryn LeDuc of Atlanta. Ms. LeDuc is a single mother of two children. She first turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in 1988. At that time she was single, pregnant and needed help providing for herself and her unborn child. Through the St. Clair County FIA she was approved for Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits (then called Aid for Dependent Children) and Medicaid. For the next several years she was on and off assistance and working at a variety of part-time jobs to help make ends meet.
In August 2001, Kathryn moved to Montmorency in search of a better life for her children. Her Family Independence Program case transferred from St. Clair to the Montmorency County FIA. Through their office she received FIP, Medicaid, and food assistance benefits.
Kathryn was referred to the Work First program in September 2001. She attended Personal Enrichment and Pride classes for one week. She then obtained a job, with the assistance of her sister, at Wire Ware Air Bag making canisters that deploy air bags. Her Work First provider, Northeast Michigan Consortium supplied her with the funds to purchase work clothing and work boots. They also provided mileage reimbursement.
Kathryn’s FIP case closed in November 2001 due to excess income from earnings. She currently receives transitional Medicaid, food assistance benefits and child day care. Ms. LeDuc was selected to receive the Achiever of the Month Award because she has worked to overcome tremendous odds to improve life for herself and her family and has achieved independence from the welfare system.
