Connie Kramer is the single mother of one child. She first turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in 1995. In 1998, Connie left Michigan and moved south. Unfortunately, while living in Florida she was in a serious auto accident. After her recovery she decided to return to Michigan.
In September 1999, Connie, who was unemployed, applied to the Branch County FIA office for assistance. She received Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, food assistance and Medicaid. In September the FIA also referred Connie to the Work First program. At her Work First orientation at the Michigan Works! Service Center she was told that the agency had a job opening. She was hired and began working at the service center, part-time as a resume writer. On May 15, 2000, she became their transportation coordinator and received not only a raise, but also full-time employment.
Transportation and day care were some of the obstacles Ms. Kramer faced as she attempted to become self-sufficient. FIA assisted her with day care and Work First provided funds to pay for car insurance, license plates and auto repairs. Work First also supplied funds for interview clothing, mileage reimbursement, computer classes and job placement. To help Connie with her living arrangements she received the funds to put a deposit on an apartment from Coldwater Christian Services.
Ms. Kramer’s FIP, food assistance and medical assistance cases have been closed. Since January 31, 2000, the only service Connie has received is day care. For several years she has provided for her household with the earnings she has received through her employment at the Michigan Works! Service Center.
Ms. Kramer has recently relocated to Tennessee. She is looking forward to living in a warmer climate and feels her life experiences have prepared her to handle any challenges that might come along.
