The May 2002 Achiever of the Month award was presented to Farrah Scott of Muskegon. Ms. Scott is the single mother of two children. She came to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in May 1996. At that time she was single, pregnant and having a difficult time providing for herself and her unborn child. Through the St. Clair County FIA she was approved for Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, Medicaid, child day care and food assistance. In addition to these services the Woman, Infant and Children program provided supplemental food.
When Farrah was referred to the Work First program they assisted her with resume writing and other job search skills. She quickly found employment and over the years has worked as a church secretary and as a cashier in a grocery store. Her Work First provider, the Muskegon/Oceana Consortium – Muskegon Department of Employment and Training, continued to support her work efforts by supplying funds for automotive repairs when her car was not roadworthy.
Although Farrah was happy to be employed she wanted to be able to provide more for her family. In 1998, Farrah enrolled in Baker College to pursue an associate’s degree in accounting and management. In May 1998, Norrell Temporary Services placed Farrah in a position at Westshore Community Federal Credit Union. In September 1998, the credit union hired her to work there full-time. She still works there today as a head teller, responsible for balancing the general ledger accounts and vault.
In June 1998, Farrah’s FIP case closed due to her earnings. She continues to receive Medicaid and child day care for her children.
Farrah continued her efforts to provide a better life for her family. Some time ago she joined the Habitat for Humanity program and worked 400 hours of sweat equity to qualify for a Habitat for Humanity home. It took a lot of hard work, but her dream was realized. In February 2002, she became a new homeowner.
Currently, Farrah is continuing her education and plans to graduate with an associate’s degree in accounting and management from Baker’s College in 2004. After completing her studies she hopes to move to a management position at Westshore Community Federal Credit Union.
