Emily Marcellino

DHS Achiever 072002 Emily Marcellino is the 104th recipient of the Family Independence Agency’s (FIA) Achiever of the Month award, July 2002. This single mother of two applied for public assistance in June 1995. At that time Emily was having difficulty finding employment and needed financial assistance to provide for her daughter. Through the Kent County FIA, she received Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, food assistance, Medicaid and day care assistance off and on for several years.

In 1996, Emily gained employment as a telemarketing supervisor. Unfortunately, after two years, the business closed and she was once again unemployed and in need of assistance. For several years, Emily worked in a variety of low-paying and non-skilled positions to support her family. For a short while she worked part-time at a pharmacy and full-time at a Sam’s Club. However, both jobs did not develop into long term employment and once again she found it necessary to apply for FIP benefits.

After these set backs Emily became determined to do whatever was necessary to increase her employability and gain self-sufficiency. In the winter of 2000, during an FIA/Work First orientation Emily learned of the educational assistance that was available to FIP clients. Through one of her Work First providers, Ross Learning Center, Emily was enrolled in the Health Care Technical and Phlebotomy program at Davenport University.

For over a year Emily juggled work, classes and child care to provide a better life for her family. Several of her Work First providers supported her efforts. Grand Rapids Community College provided her with transportation to and from school and provided funds to purchase clothing for her internships at Quest Laboratories and Spectrum Hospital. Davenport College assisted Emily with resume writing, financial aid and a job referral. FIA assisted with vehicle repairs and child day care.

While attending school Emily worked part-time as a housekeeper at Extended Stay America in Kentwood. In June 2002, she received her diploma from Davenport University and obtained another part-time job as a receptionist with Spectrum Health Care Clinic. While this was not the job she studied for, she was pleased to be working for a health care provider.

Emily’s cash assistance case closed in May 2002. She continues to receive food assistance, Medicaid and child day care. In the future Emily plans to continue her education in the medical field and enroll in a licensed practical nursing program.

Emily’s hard work and determination has continued to yield positive results. In August 2002, she was hired to work full-time at Spectrum Health Care Clinic. Today, she is well on a path that will inspire not only her own personal development, but also her children’s.
