Rechealle Barrett of St. Louis, Michigan was presented with the November 2002, Achiever of the Month award. This single mother of four first turned to the Family Independence Agency (FIA) for assistance in the summer of 1991. At that time, she was pregnant, her temporary summer job had just ended and she did not know where else to go for help. Through the Gratiot County FIA, Rechealle received Aid for Dependent Children, now known as the Family Independence Program (FIP) benefits, Food Assistance, Medicaid and day care.
Over the years Rechealle continued to receive cash assistance and although she maintained employment, she never earned enough to work her way off welfare. In 1999, Rechealle gave birth to her son. She was deferred from participation in the Work First program because he had serious medical problems. When her son’s condition improved her family encouraged her to reenter the work force. Despite apprehensions over child care and her lack of transportation, Rechealle agreed to begin searching for employment.
The FIA referred Rechealle to the Work First program. She attended Job Club and her Work First provider, Mid-Michigan Industries helped her develop a resume. They also assisted her with the purchase of a used car. When the vehicle was no longer road worthy they provided funds for repairs. The FIA supported Rechealle’s work efforts by providing day care benefits and enrolling her in a self-esteem building workshop to improve her self-confidence.
Rechealle’s family has been very supportive. A relative, who works at Great Lakes Coating, Inc. in Mount Pleasant, knew of a job opening at the company and gave Rechealle an application. Rechealle applied, interviewed and was hired in March 2002 as a parts worker. She is still employed there today. Another relative provides day care for Rechealle’s children while she is at work. Having her children with someone she trusts has eased Rechealle’s fears and allowed her to feel more comfortable with maintaining employment.
In August 2002, Rechealle’s FIP case closed due to her earnings. She continues to receive Food Assistance benefits and day care. Her children receive Medicaid.
