Governor Jennifer Granholm has proclaimed
April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Along with other activities,
the Michigan Department
of Human Services and the Michigan
Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board will hold three media
roundtables during the month to increase awareness about available sexual
assault services including Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner programs (SANEs).
SANEs are programs in which registered nurses with specialized
training conduct sexual assault forensic examinations. They can be found
in either hospital or community-based settings. SANE programs work to
eliminate the re-traumatization of sexual assault survivors who seek medical
help. SANE programs have substantially enhanced the quality of care survivors
receive. Click

The media roundtables will be held at SANE program locations
in Howell, Grand Rapids and Mt. Clemens, on April 8, 14, and 25 respectively.
Current funding levels allow MDVPTB to provide funding
for rape prevention and services to just 29 programs in Michigan, covering
up to 56 of Michigan's 83 counties. Funds are used by those programs to
address the needs of sexual assault survivors aged 12 and older, enhance
system coordination to better respond to survivors, and increase public
awareness about the issue of sexual violence.
Sexual assault service provider agencies in Michigan will
be hosting events throughout the month to recognize those who have survived
all types of sexual violence, raise community awareness about the issue
of sexual assault and remember those who were murdered. Click on these
