Governor Granholm Declares April Sexual Assault
Awareness Month |
|
Governor Granholm has proclaimed
April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Sexual assault service provider
agencies throughout the state will be hosting events to recognize those
who have survived all types of sexual violence and to remember those who
were murdered. The National
Sexual Violence Resource Center has identified April 6th as "A Day
to End Sexual Violence" to encourage individuals, groups and organizations
across the country to lead or participate in an awareness-raising activity
in their community. To locate a program in your area, click here.
MDVPTB addresses sexual assault with rape prevention and
services grants to 29 programs in Michigan, covering 56 of Michigan's
83 counties. This funding is intended to address the needs of sexual assault
survivors aged 12 and older; enhance system coordination to better respond
to survivors; and increase public awareness about the issue of sexual
violence. Sexual Assault Awareness Month is an opportunity for us all
to reaffirm our commitment to eliminating sexual violence in Michigan.

Congress Passes Violence Against
Women Act (VAWA) III |
|
On January 5, 2006, Congress passed the Violence Against
Women and Department of Justice Reauthorization Act of 2005 (Pub. L. No.
109-162), most commonly known as VAWA III. The action continues grant
programs established in the original Violence Against Women Act of 1994
and improves and expands legal tools and grant programs addressing domestic
violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking. Although funds
have not yet been allocated, the act reveals a new emphasis on and avenues
for enhancing efforts to address sexual assault.

Sexual Assault Agencies Will Mentor
Other Agencies as Part of Capacity Building Effort |
|
The Michigan Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment
Board (MDVPTB) awarded a combination of capacity building and mentoring
grants to six agencies to help increase the number of agencies offering
quality and comprehensive services for sexual assault survivors in Michigan.
Three capacity building grants, ranging from $55,000-$74,000,
will be used for assessment and strategic planning over an 18-month period
to insure that sexual assault is an integral focus of the funded agency.
The grant recipients are Shelterhouse/Council on Domestic Violence and
Sexual Assault in Midland, HAVEN in Pontiac, and the Domestic Assault
Shelter Coalition in Three Rivers.
An additional three agencies will each receive $25,000
to provide technical assistance and support to the three agencies engaged
in the capacity building work. MDVPTB is using the project to promote
meaningful and enduring mentoring relationships. The mentoring agencies
are the Center for Women in Transition in Holland, the Women's Resource
Center of Northern Michigan in Petoskey, and Sexual Assault Services of
Battle Creek.
Ms. Carla Blinkhorn, executive director of the YWCA of
Grand Rapids, will assist MDVPTB as the project leader. She will facilitate
efforts involving all six grantees to integrate learning, evaluate capacity
building, replicability, and identify agency needs.
