April
is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Governor Jennifer Granholm has proclaimed April as Sexual
Assault Awareness Month in the state of Michigan. Sexual Assault service
providers throughout the state will be hosting events to recognize those
who have survived all types of sexual violence and to remember those who
were murdered. To locate a program in your area, click
here.
MDVPTB
has focused efforts on sexual violence for many years. The Board funded
the Sexual
Assault Benchbook, recently published by the Michigan
Judicial Institute, and consulted with the Institute on several key
sections. MDVPTB provides expert consultation and training on sexual assault
issues to other statewide agencies and projects as well.
MDVPTB also
allocates sexual assault prevention and services money to 29 programs
in Michigan. This funding is intended to address the needs of sexual assault
survivors aged 12 and older; enhance system coordination to better respond
to survivors; and increase public awareness about the issue of sexual
violence.
The Board
is also pleased that a growing number of Michigan communities are adopting
Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANE) programs. The Nurse Examiners are
specially trained in collecting forensic evidence and providing trauma
support to survivors of sexual assault.
- An article
in the October
edition of our e-Report describes these efforts in more detail.

Michigan.
Anticipating
this month’s focus, MDVPTB’s Michigan
Resource Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence recently distributed
to sexual assault programs across the state a packet of educational materials
– including information about the latest research
and fact sheets on sexual assault involving teens
and within intimate
relationships. The packet also included many tools compiled by the
National Sexual Violence
Resource Center for organizing Sexual Assault Awareness Month events.
Please join
us as we encourage Michigan communities to take action to end sexual violence.

About
the Michigan Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board (MDVPTB).
The
Michigan
Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment Board (MDVPTB) was legislatively
enacted in 1978 and administratively housed within the Michigan Family Independence
Agency. The seven-member Board is appointed by the Governor and charged
with focusing state activity on domestic violence. The Board administers
state and federal funding for sexual assault programs, domestic violence
shelters and advocacy services, develops and recommends policy in collaboration
with other agencies, and develops and provides technical assistance and
training. |
|
| Many
resource materials are available through the Michigan
Resource Center on Domestic and Sexual Violence (MRCDSV). The Resource
Center is a unique collection of over 3,500 books and 300 videos on domestic
violence, sexual assault, stalking, violence prevention, nonprofit management,
medical and legal response to violence against women, public policy and
much more. The MRCDSV is a collaboration of the Michigan Domestic Violence
Prevention and Treatment Board and the Michigan Coalition Against Domestic
and Sexual Violence (MCADSV). The MDVPTB is the primary funder and owner
of the collection. Additional funding is provided by the U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services and other generous supporters of the MCADSV. |
