Michigan License Number Conversion with NIPR
Individual and Agency Electronic Transaction with NIPR
For Michigan transactions, the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR) currently uses an individual’s Social Security Number (SSN) as their license number and an agency’s Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) as their license number.
Effective June 17, 2013, Michigan will have converted from SSN to the National Producer Number (NPN) for individuals and agencies will have converted from FEIN to the Michigan state-specific System ID license number for NIPR transactions.
After June 17, 2013, if the following transactions are submitted with the old license numbers (SSN or FEIN), the transactions will be declined:
- All Electronic Applications (resident and non-resident producer, adjuster, solicitor, counselor and surplus lines)
- Address Change Requests
Michigan Electronic Appointments and Terminations
Additionally, effective June, 17, 2013, Michigan appointment and terminations for individuals will require either a SSN and /or NPN. The conversion of SSN to NPN for license number will not affect MI appointments and terminations at this time. Agency appointments and terminations will also continue to require FEIN and not the state-specific System ID number.
Company License Numbers
Company license numbers are not changing and will remain the same. Appointments should continue to be submitted with the current NAIC CoCode.
