Why was DIT created?

Answer:

DIT was created in an effort to achieve a unified and more cost-effective approach for managing information technology in Michigan. This was to be accomplished by strengthening and coordinating IT policy decisions across the enterprise. DIT responsibilities include:

  • Centralize IT policy-making
  • Unify strategic and infrastructure planning for technology
  • Improve information, project, and system management
  • Act as general contractor for technology products and services
  • Provide citizens with more timely and cost-effective delivery of state services

See Appendix E of Michigan’s IT plan for more details about the Executive Orders that created DIT.
