May 6, 2009 - Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth Director Stanley "Skip" Pruss announced today that U.S. Department of Labor Secretary Hilda Solis will be attending the "Green Today, Jobs Tomorrow" conference on May 11 at the Lansing Center.
"We are honored to host Secretary Solis for this event to represent President Barack Obama along with Van Jones, his green jobs advisor. The national recognition we have received for the Green Jobs Initiative underscores Michigan's importance in the emerging green economy," Granholm said. "President Obama recognizes that Michigan has a unique advantage by positioning our R&D, supply chain capacity and advanced manufacturing expertise to bring new investment and jobs to our state."
Secretary Hilda Solis was confirmed as Secretary of Labor on February 24, 2009. Prior to confirmation as Secretary of Labor, Secretary Solis represented the 32nd Congressional District, a position she held from 2001 - 2009. A recognized leader on clean energy jobs, she authored the Green Jobs Act which provided funding for "green" collar job training for veterans, displaced workers, at risk youth, and individuals in families under 200 percent of the federal poverty line.
Pruss said a limited number of registrations are available.
"We urge anyone who wants to be a part of this conference to sign up today. It's not a job fair but an opportunity to bring together state and national leaders in alternative energy to strategize for Michigan's future," Pruss said. "We are pleased with the overwhelming response since we've already exceeded our goal of 1,000 registrants. We've added additional break out sessions and meeting space to try to keep up with the demand."
Three new breakout sessions are:
- Michigan's Green Jobs Initiative
- Michigan's Energy Future Today
- Linking Good Green Jobs to Education
Registration is $135 until May 7th (if space permits). A limited number of student registrations are available for only $35 for college and high school students who provide documentation of enrollment. Attendees can pay with VISA or MasterCard online at www.migreenjob.com. Hotel accommodations are available at the Radisson Downtown Lansing through their website, http://www.radisson.com/lansingmi, or by calling (517) 482-0188.
