JUNE 30, 2008 - Michigan's Unemployment Insurance Agency will begin mailing applications next week to jobless workers who may qualify for the newly authorized 13 weeks of federal extended unemployment benefits.
"We are identifying those who have benefit years ending after May 1, 2007, and have exhausted their state unemployment benefits. This is the target group for the Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program. UIA will be mailing these individuals applications and filing instructions," Keith Cooley, director of the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, said today.
UIA expects next week's mailing will reach an estimated 230,000 unemployed workers.
In the meantime, Chris Peretto, acting UIA director, urged jobless workers not to call the agency to inquire about their eligibility for these federal EUC benefits, as all potentially eligible unemployed workers will be notified by mail and instructed on how to apply for these federal benefits. In addition, unemployed workers who are receiving regular unemployment benefits will be mailed the same instructions and application as they near the end of their regular state unemployment benefits.
The week of July 6-12 will be first week for which benefits can be paid. UIA expects to begin issuing EUC payments during the week of July 20-26. Unemployment benefits are typically issued for two-week periods after workers certify that they were unemployed and met eligibility requirements for the two weeks.
The EUC program provides up to 13 weeks of federally-funded unemployment benefits to workers who exhaust their state unemployment claims. President Bush today signed the authorizing legislation for EUC.
