MPSC Grants Licenses to Three Alternative Gas Suppliers

Contact:  Judy Palnau (517) 241-3323

October 29, 2009

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today granted licenses to Border Energy, Inc., Just Energy Michigan Corp., and Santanna Energy Services as alternative gas suppliers (AGS).

The MPSC determined that the applications are in the public interest and that by granting these requests for a license, opportunities for competition may expand.

In Case No. U-15794, the Commission granted an AGS license to Border Energy, Inc.  The company, headquartered in Powell, Ohio, has an office in Niles, Mich.  It applied for a license on April 27.

In Case No. U-15980, the Commission granted a license to Just Energy Michigan Corp.  The company, headquartered in Ontario, Canada, has an office in Southfield, Mich.  As an affiliate of Universal Gas & Electric Corp (d/b/a Commerce Energy), it is bound by the settlement agreement approved by the MPSC on April 16 in Case No. U-15577.  It applied for a license on Sept. 22, which reflected its acquisition of Commerce Energy, Inc.  Commerce Energy originally filed for a license on May 21.

In Case No. U-16015, the Commission granted a license to Santanna Energy Services.  The company, headquartered in Texas, has an office in Southfield, Mich.  It applied for a license on July 7.

The Commission conditioned the licenses on compliance with all applicable provisions of Public Act 634 of 2002, the Commission's orders and administrative rules, and each of the delivering natural gas utilities' tariffs.  Failure to comply with any of these provisions may result in revocation of the licenses or other penalties.

The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth.
