Insurance Prelicensing Education Exclusions & Waivers

Section 1204(2) of the Insurance Code, being MCLA 500.1204(2), allows for insurance licensing candidates to waive prelicensing education (PE) and under what conditions.

If I hold a professional designation in insurance, am I eligible for a waiver of prelicensing education?
What proof is required to obtain the waiver of prelicensing education?
Can I request a waiver if I have a college degree with a concentration in insurance?
What proof is required to waive prelicensing education with college credits?
From whom do I request the waiver of prelicensing education?

Question If I hold a professional designation in insurance, am I eligible for a waiver of prelicensing education?
Answer

Yes. A waiver of Life and/or Health prelicensing education requirement may be granted for individuals holding the CLU, CIC, CFP, FLMI, LUTCF, CEBS, RHU, REBC, HIA, and/or ChFC designations.

The Property and/or Casualty prelicensing education requirement may be waived for individuals holding the CPCU, AAI, ARM, and/or CIC designations.
   
Question What proof is required to obtain the waiver of prelicensing education?
Answer

A copy of the certificate or a letter confirming the certificate along with a letter requesting the waiver.

   
Question Can I request a waiver if I have a college degree with a concentration in insurance?
Answer Yes.  Individuals must possess a concentration of credit insurance from an accredited college.  A concentration of college credit is considered to be 21 term credits or 17 semester credit hours of insurance course work.

    --A concentration in Risk Management or Property or Casualty course work is required to waive the Property and/or Casualty prelicensing education requirement.

   --A concentration in Life and Health or related Estate Planning course work is required to waive the Life and/or Health prelicensing education requirement.

   
Question What proof is required to waive prelicensing education with college credits?
Answer

Copies of the college transcript and course descriptions are required along with a letter requesting the waiver.

Answer

The letter should contain the request for a prelicensure education waiver and your contact information to include your name, mailing address, telephone number and email address.  Please contact our office at 877-999-6442 for additional information.

   
Question Once I receive the waiver do I need to take it to the test center on exam day?
Answer

Yes.  This waiver may be substituted for the prelicensing certificate at the test centers.

   
Who is excluded from State Approved Prelicensing Education?
If I am excluded how do I obtain study materials for the respective exam?
 
Question Who is excluded from State Approved Prelicensing Education?
Answer

Candidates who are obtaining qualifications for the Limited Lines P/C, Title Insurance, Adjusters, Counselors, or Surplus Lines are not required to take prelicensing education.

Candidates who are obtaining the qualification for limited line credit insurance are not required to complete a state approved prelicensing education program.  However, these candidates must receive a program of instruction from their sponsoring insurer.

   
Question If I am excluded how do I obtain study materials for the respective exam?
Answer

Our office has entered into a partnership with Prometric to administer insurance licensing examinations. In addition to administering the respective exams, Prometric also publishes the content outlines for all of the licensing exams on its website at www.prometric.com/Michigan.
