State Department of Labor & Economic Growth Participating in Opportunity Expo for General Motors Workers

Contact:  Mario L. Morrow 517-373-9280
Agency: Labor & Economic Growth

April 24, 2008 - The Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG) will be presenting information about its No Worker Left Behind program at a Job Opportunity Expo taking place in Pontiac on Friday, April 25, 2008.

Sponsored by General Motors Corporation and the United Auto Workers (UAW), the Opportunity Expo is aimed at GM workers who are considering buyout options or retirement offers.

DLEG and Michigan Works! Agency representatives will be on hand to explain the No Worker Left Behind (NWLB) program, Governor Granholm's initiative to offer up to two years worth of free tuition at any Michigan community college, university, or other approved training programs for training in high demand occupations and emerging industries or entrepreneurial endeavors. NWLB gives Michigan workers the opportunity to acquire the skills they need to win good-paying jobs in today's global economy.

The Expo is a one-day opportunity for GM workers to learn from retirement experts, gather information about educational resources, and learn about franchise opportunities and other options for starting a business.

The Pontiac Expo will take place at the Marriott at Centerpoint, 3600 Centerpoint Pkwy., from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The Expo is open to all GM workers as well as their families. There is no charge to attend. Attendees will be entered into a drawing for a vehicle voucher worth $15,000 toward the purchase of a new truck.

An expo also will be held in Grand Rapids on April 29 at the Crowne Plaza Grand Rapids, 5700 28th St., S.E., from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
