Warm weather is just around the corner, signaling the beginning of construction and landscaping projects for homeow ners and businesses alike. Unfortunately, more than ten thousand underground utility facilities are damaged annually, as a result of homeowners, business owners or construction companies digging and hitting utility cables or underground gas pipelines. Additionally, damaged cables and lines could result in serious injuries and the loss of critical utility services.
"We commend the Michigan Legislature for designating April as "Raise the Flags and Dig Safely" Month and urge anyone undertaking a construction, excavation or landscaping project to call MISS DIG at least three working days before beginning a project," said Michigan Public Service Commission Chairman Laura Chappelle. "The public awareness campaign is designed to promote safety and remind Michigan residents and businesses that Michigan law requires them to call MISS DIG at least three working days before beginning a project." Chairman Chappelle also noted that "Given the magnitude of underground facilities damaged annually, it is extremely important to immediately report any facility hits to the owners of that facility so that corrective action can be taken."
MISS DIG may be reach ed 24 hours a day at 1-800-482-7171. MISS DIG will arrange to have the utility facilities staked in the designated area without charge. MISS DIG is Michigan's one-call center and its purpose is to arrange for the marking and staking of underground utility facilities. MISS DIG is a non-profit organization.
The MISS DIG public awareness campaign is supported by Consumers Energy Company, DTE Energy Company, parent company of The Detroit Edison Company and Michigan Consolidated Gas Company, Ameritech Michigan, and the Michigan Public Service Commission.
