Agency: Labor & Economic Growth

DECEMBER 18, 2002 - Michigan Department of Consumer & Industry Services (CIS), Bureau of Family Services has issued an order of summary suspension and notice of intent to revoke action to Genesee County group day care home provider, Kaleka Lewis, 2314 Copeman Blvd., Flint, Michigan.  Kaleka Lewis has been ordered to immediately cease providing care to children effective 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, December 17, 2002.  This action is the result of a recent complaint investigation of the group day care home.

Under Michigan statute, a Group Day Care Home is defined as “a private home in which more than 6 but not more than 12 minor children are given care and supervision for periods of less than 24 hours a day, unattended by a parent or legal guardian, except children related to an adult member of the family by blood, marriage, or adoption.  Group day care home includes a home that gives care to an unrelated minor child for more than 4 weeks during the calendar year.”

The December 17, 2002 findings of the complaint investigation found that:

·       On December 13, 2002, the Licensee allowed an 11-month-old child care child to be left unsupervised in the care of a 12-year-old household member.

·       On December 13, 2002, the child was admitted to Genesys Hospital, diagnosed with subdural hematoma and retinal bleeding, injuries consistent with being shaken.

Effective 6:00 P.M December 17, 2002, the Summary Suspension Order requires Kaleka Lewis not to operate a Group Day Care Home at 2314 Copeman Blvd., Flint, Michigan or at any other address or location.  Children are not to be received for care after that date or time.  The order also requires Kaleka Lewis to inform all of the parents or guardians of children in care that her license has been suspended and that she can no longer provide child care.

Kaleka Lewis has held a license to operate a Group Day Care Home since October 11, 2002.  The license was for 12 children.
