(April 18, 2007) There was a full house yesterday in the Senate Judiciary Committee as the committee unanimously reported out Senate Bill 25 and House Bill 4208. Both bills amend the Deaf Person Interpreter Act and would provide for increased qualifications for interpreters. The audience included advocacy groups and deaf persons and students who use interpreters. Senator Gleason, the sponsor of Senate Bill 25, was present to provide an overview of the issue and a description of the two bills. Chris Hunter, the long-time director of the Division of Deaf and Hard of Hearing in the Department of Labor & Economic Growth also testified. The subject matter of the bills has been split so that the Legislature can enact both bills. Senate floor action is expected as early as Thursday, April 19.
