Sample Ordinance

A sample ordinance is provided for use when a unit of government wishes to become responsible for the administration and enforcement of a construction code. If the unit of government does not currently have enforcement responsibility, the ordinance must be attached to the Application for Approval to Administer and Enforce.

Units of government may use this format to create their own ordinance or they may simply retype the ordinance, filling in the blanks. A unit of government may either provide a proposed ordinance or a copy of the certified ordinance that has been adopted by the municipality. However, the adoption date is not the effective enforcement date. The bureau will determine the effective date based on the schedule of the Construction Code Commission and the appropriate notification period.

Questions relative to the ordinance process may be directed to the bureau's Office of Local Government and Consumer Services at 517-241-9347.
