MTI FAQs
MTI Classes
1. What’s a MTI class?
This is a course with occupational safety or health content offered by MIOSHA under the MTI banner. MTI classes have a consistent defined course length, instructional format, resources, activities and objectives, and assessment.
2. Who will be teaching MTI classes?
MIOSHA staff (CET consultants, CSHD, and GISHD staff) that has been trained in the MIOSHA/OSHA standards and presentation skills and other MIOSHA approved instructors.
3. What if an employer wants an MTI class taught at their facility for their employees?
Consultants should encourage employers to attend the scheduled public MTI classes in their area. If an employer can commit 20 attendees to attending one or more MTI classes and pay the certification and material fees, a consultant may work with this employer to schedule MTI classes at their facility.
4. What if an attendee has to leave before the class is done? Can he/she still receive a certificate of attendance?
No. A certificate of attendance and CEU’s are awarded to those who attend the entire course. However, participants who attend the entire course but choose not to complete the test will still be awarded an attendance certificate.
Certification Process
5. When will MTI Level One certification start?
The “official” start date was 10/01/07.
6. What’s Level One certification?
Level One certification will be awarded when a student attends the minimum number of classes within a three-year time frame and successfully demonstrates knowledge of the course topic. These are CET seminars/workshops for the new safety & health staff and others interested in general S&H information to begin the process of developing a S&H Management System and becoming familiar with MIOSHA standards. See MIOSHA/CET #0160.
7. How do attendees demonstrate competency?
Testing is crucial for the demonstration of competencies. A post training test score of 70% or higher is required to pass a MTI class. MTI instructors will collect all answer sheets, score them, review the test, and provide results to any attendee who wants them at the end of the class. All answer sheets will be maintained by MCC.
8. What if I have an attendee who doesn’t pass the test?
If this attendee wants this class to count towards their Level One certification the instructor must assure that the attendee passes the test. The instructor may need to conduct a review of problematic questions with borderline attendees after class. If a participant demonstrates a total lack of understanding of course content they may have to retake the class.
9. What if an employer took one of these Level One classes before the “official” start date?
MCC classes taken under the MTI banner and comparable non-MTI classes taken in FY2007 qualify for Level One certification without examination. Letters were sent to these attendees about Level One grandfathering.
10. What do attendees receive after completing Level One certification?
These attendees will receive a congratulatory letter and a MTI Level One certificate.
11. How/when will attendees receive their Level One certification?
MTI class attendees will be provided a tracking log for their use. When a student has successfully passed the minimum number of MTI Level One classes, MCC will mail them the letter and certificate.
12. What if someone hasn’t attended an MTI class but based on their experience they want to test out to receive Level One certification?
This question is under consideration.
13. When will MTI Level Two certification start?
We anticipate the launch of Level 2 sometime in FY 09.
14. When we start offering Level Two classes can attendees start getting Level Two certification before they finish their Level One certification?
Yes, they can take one or more Level Two classes but Level Two certification cannot occur until the student has received their Level One certification.
15.
Will there be other certifications for MTI classes?
MTI courses will also be given CEU’s by MCC. As MTI classes are developed they will be submitted for relevant profession specific certification units.
Certification Fee
16. What does the certification fee cover?
The $20/attendee fee covers MCC’s administrative costs for creating a unique class code for each MTI class, entering attendees information into the MTI database for each class, maintaining class records, and the MTI database.
17. A consultant schedules two different MTI ½ day workshops on the same day. Will attendees have to pay the certification fee twice?
Yes. The certification and material fees are charged for each MTI class even if these are offered back to back.
18. What if attendees who are in an MTI class do not want to achieve Level One certification? Do they still have to pay the certification fee?
Yes. Even if an attendee does not want the certification, their information is still entered into the database and administrative costs are incurred.
19. How/when will co-sponsors reimburse MCC for the collected certification fee?
After the class, MCC will send the co-sponsor an invoice.
Material Fee
20. What does the material fee cover?
This $10/attendee fee covers the cost of producing all the class materials. These materials may be provided by MIOSHA as a hard copy or on a CD.
21.
What if a co-sponsor wants to produce all the class materials themselves?
The $10 fee will apply to all CET public-offered seminars offered in FY09. Making alternatives/exceptions will complicate this new policy and will not be considered until we evaluate the policy.
22.
How/when will co-sponsors reimburse MIOSHA for the collected material fee?
After the class, MIOSHA will send the co-sponsor an invoice.
MTI Marketing/Promotion
23. What kind of MTI promotion are we planning?
The same marketing efforts will made on behalf of the MTI classes as done with other public CET seminars through the MIOSHA website and seminar brochures. The official MTI logo will appear on the website, the brochures, and all MTI class materials. In addition, MTI classes will be listed on the MIOSHA MTI webpage and the MCC MTI webpage. The MIOSHA News includes a regular section about the MTI. Co-sponsors of MTI classes are encouraged to market and promote MTI classes.
MTI Class Co-sponsors
24. What if I have a new co-sponsor who did not attend the co-sponsor meeting and would like to co-sponsor one or more MTI classes?
Consultants may work with a new co-sponsor for scheduling MTI classes. The consultant will need to review MTI information with the co-sponsor. However, scheduling more classes should be discussed with supervision prior to scheduling so that the seminar calendar can be reviewed and decisions made on the necessity of adding more classes.
25. What are the new co-sponsor responsibilities for MTI classes?
All MTI classes will use standardized daily sign-in sheets, registration forms, evaluation forms, and certificates of attendance. The co-sponsors will be responsible for returning completed forms to MCC and generating certificates. See checklist and instructions for MTI forms. The use of the new seminar evaluation forms is effective immediately for all CET seminars. There are two evaluations forms, with the same content. For MTI courses, the evaluation form has the MTI logo. The evaluation form for other CET seminars only has the MIOSHA logo.
26. When will co-sponsors receive the MTI forms?
When FY 09 seminar planning is final, co-sponsors will receive master files from MCC.
27. What other ways does the MTI affect seminar planning?
All classes under the MTI banner shall use the same course description, agenda, and programs and materials developed and approved by the Core Curriculum Committee. Any changes to the master program should be pre-approved by the Core Curriculum Committee.
