Residential construction is an area of the construction industry that we believe
would benefit from increased focus by MIOSHA. Many residential projects do not
get inspected due to the transient nature of such work, and many of the projects
are small and are in remote areas. In addition, the contractors involved are
often small operators and do not have the resources to hire staff with health
and safety expertise, and have little expertise in health and safety themselves.
However, when we review MIOSHA accident and fatality investigation activity,
it becomes clear there are certainly hazards that need to be addressed.
In an effort to show a greater presence in this area, the MIOSHA Construction
Safety and Health Division (CSHD) will be focusing more of their resources in
conducting inspections in residential construction this construction season.
This residential construction focus will include single-family dwellings and
multiple family units (e.g., duplexes, condominiums, apartment buildings).
This residential construction focus is in progress at this time and will continue
at least until the end of the calendar year 2005, at which time MIOSHA will
assess the results.
All employers, including residential builders are encouraged to contact the MIOSHA
Construction Safety & Health Division (CSHD) at (517) 322-1856 if they have
questions regarding worksite health and safety or compliance issues. The MIOSHA
Consultation, Education and Training (CET) Division provides training and on-site
audit services at the employers request, free of charge. CET can be contacted
directly at (517) 322-1809.
