MCB 2008 College Preparatory Program at Western Michigan University, June 26 to August 15, 2008

Contact:  Lisa Kisiel, MCB, 269-337-3238

Who:  For blind and visually impaired high school juniors and seniors, as well as anyone else who would like to pursue college training but has not done so as a person who is blind or visually impaired.

When:  June 26 - August 15, 2008

Where:  Kalamazoo (briefly at MCB Training Center, then at WMU student dorm)

Why:

·        To give potential college students the opportunity to take a class for credit and find out what it's like to be a college student.

·        To let students try out their independent living skills in a supported environment before the rush of a full-time academic load kicks in.

·        To give students an opportunity to learn about themselves and make plans for their education after high school.

The Michigan Commission for the Blind (MCB) 2008 College Preparatory program is gearing up for another summer.  As some of you may know, MCB's College Prep program is a summer program designed to provide blind and visually impaired students with an opportunity for a college experience prior to becoming full-time students.  Students will live on the campus of Western Michigan University for the Summer II semester (June 26 through August 15) and take one college class for college credit along with a host of other classes and activities designed by MCB.

To determine a student's readiness to meet the challenges of academic classes and daily living on campus, each student must complete a college assessment.  For students who want to participate in the 2008 College Prep program this summer, the last day to begin the college assessment at the Michigan Commission for the Blind Training Center in Kalamazoo is June 16.  MCB counselors are accepting referrals now for the College Prep program.

For more information, contact your MCB counselor or one of the MCB College Prep Program Coordinators:  Lisa Kisiel at 269-337- 3238 or kisiell@michigan.govor Shannon McVoy at 269-337-3449 or mcvoys@michigan.gov.
