  • Course Description:
    This course is designed to help the fire service develop the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and effectively manage a propane emergency. It is based upon nationally recognized engineering practices and recommended operating practices.

    Student Prerequisites:

    • Eighteen years of age or older
    • Members of an organized Michigan Fire Department shall have received training prior to participating in live fire training evolutions which meet the performance objectives for Fire Fighter I as outlined in Chapter 3, 3-2 through 3-5 of NFPA 1001, 2002 Edition, Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications:
    • Safety
    • Fire Behavior
    • Portable Extinguishers
    • Personal Protective Equipment
    • Ladders
    • Fire Hose, Appliances and Streams
    • Overhaul
    • Water Supply
    • Ventilation
    • Forcible Entry

    Personal Protective Clothing and Equipment Requirements:

    • Structural fire fighting turnout gear which includes helmet, turnout coat, turnout pants with boots, gloves and nomex hood.
    • Self-contained breathing apparatus
    • PASS device

    Safety:

    • A safety officer shall be appointed for all live fire training evolutions in accordance with NFPA 1403, 2002 Edition - Safety Officer. A "safety officer" is an individual qualified by the Authority Having Jurisdiction to maintain a safe working environment at all live fire training evolutions.
    • The safety officer for the live fire evolution shall have the authority, regardless of rank, to intervene and terminate the operation when, in his or her judgment, a potential or actual danger, accident, or unsafe condition exists.
    • Safety Officers shall not be assigned other duties.

    To schedule this course, contact Brian Lincoln, Stanford LP Gas, Incorporated at 989-835-4754.  This course is only operational between April 1 and October 31 and will only be scheduled once per county during a training season.  The county requesting training should coordinate with fire departments in the county to get as many departments to participate.
