Barber, Barber Instructor, Barbershop and Barber College licenses are renewed on a 2-year cycle, expiring September 30.

License renewals for barber instructors are valid for two years and expire biennially September 30. License renewals for barber student instructors are valid for one year from the date of issuance.  An extension of a barber student instructor license beyond that time period requires approval by the board.

License renewals issued for barber students are valid for a period of two years from the date of issue and may be renewed one additional year. An extension of a student license beyond that time period requires approval by the department.

Student barber and student barber instructor renewal notifications are not automatically mailed out. They must contact the department for an application.

Renewal notification will be mailed to each current licensee, at the address on record, 30 to 44 days before the license expires. It is the responsibility of the licensee to notify the department of any name or address changes.  Once renewals have been mailed licensees may renew online at www.michigan.gov/elicense. 

License renewals received after September 30 can be renewed with submission of the regular renewal fee, plus a $20.00 late fee until November 29.  After November 29 of the renewal year the licensee must apply for relicensure.

Barbers and Barber Instructors may make address chagnes online only during renewal time.  If a barbershop or barber college changes locations or owners, the license becomes void; therefore, you DO NOT use a renewal form or the online renewal service.  You DO call our office or download a license application form our site.
